Unsteady three-dimensional flow phenomena have major effects on the aerodynamic performance of, and heat transfer to, gas-turbine blading. Investigation of the mechanisms associated with these phenomena requires an experimental facility that is capable of simulating a gas turbine, but at lower levels of temperature and pressure to allow conventional measurement techniques. This book reports on the design, development and commissioning of a new experimental facility that models these unsteady three-dimensional flow phenomena. The new facility, which consists of a 62%-size, high-pressure gas- turbine stage mounted in a transient wind tunnel, simulates the turbine design point of a full-stage turbine. The book describes the aerodynamic and mechanical design of the new facility, a rigorous stress analysis of the facility's rotating system and the three-stage commissioning of the facility. The book concludes with an assessment of the turbine stage performance.

Compressor Performance is a reference book and CD-ROM for compressor design engineers and compressor maintenance engineers, as well as engineering students. The book covers the full spectrum of information needed for an individual to select, operate, test and maintain axial or centrifugal compressors. It includes basic aerodynamic theory to provide the user with the "how's" and "why's" of compressor design. Maintenance engineers will especially appreciate the troubleshooting guidelines offered. Includes many example problems and reference data such as gas properties and flow meter calculations to enable easy analysis of compressor performance in practice. Includes companion CD with computer programs. M. Theodore Gresh has been with the Elliot Company in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, since 1975, initially working on the mechanical and aerodynamic design and application of centrifugal compressors. Unrivalled coverage of the theory and practical use of all kinds of compressors in industrial use from an industry-leading company source Complete subject reference and learning resource in one stop, suitable for newly graduated engineers and experienced professional reference use Includes companion CD-ROM

14th International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging addresses current and novel turbocharging system choices and components with a renewed emphasis to address the challenges posed by emission regulations and market trends. The contributions focus on the development of air management solutions and waste heat recovery ideas to support thermal propulsion systems leading to high thermal efficiency and low exhaust emissions. These can be in the form of internal combustion engines or other propulsion technologies (eg. Fuel cell) in both direct drive and hybridised configuration. 14th International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging also provides a particular focus on turbochargers, superchargers, waste heat recovery turbines and related air managements components in both electrical and mechanical forms.

Train Aerodynamics: Fundamentals and Applications is the first reference to provide a comprehensive overview of train aerodynamics with full scale data results. With the most up-to-date information on recent advances and the possibilities of improvement in railway facilities, this book will benefit railway engineers, train operators, train manufacturers, infrastructure managers and researchers of train aerodynamics. As the subject of train aerodynamics has evolved slowly over the last few decades with train speeds gradually increasing, and as a result of increasing interest in new train types and high-speed lines, this book provides a timely resource on the topic. Examines the fundamentals and the state-of-the-art of train aerodynamics, beginning with experimental, numerical and analytical tools, and then thoroughly discussing the specific approaches in other sections Features the latest developments and progress in computational aerodynamics and experimental facilities Addresses problems relating to train aerodynamics, from the dimensioning of railway structures and trains, to risk analysis related to safety issues and maintenance Discusses basic flow patterns caused by bridges and embankments
