The role of cement in the durability of concrete is discussed in this paper in reference to the characteristics of pastes, mortars and concretes. The pore structure of hardened cement pastevaries noticeably between cements of the same Type and is modifiedby the inclusion of cement replacement materials such as fly ash, blast furnace slag and silica fume. Differences in cementcan cause a wide range of performance in pastes and mortars due tovariations in pore structure and products of hydration. In concretes of a similar grade, important properties relating to durability such as water sorptivity and carbonation can also vary widely depending on the cement type. (author abstract).
